Committees & Study Groups

In addition to these outreach activities, the League promotes understanding of local problems through monthly general meetings and focused study committees. See the Calendar for the time and place of the general meeting and a listing of committee meetings.

The General Meeting of the South County League is usually held on the third Wednesday morning of the month but is subject to change. It is held at The South County Civic Center on 16700 Jog Road in Delray Beach.

In addition there are meetings of special interest groups which include:

·        Local Communities:  Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, and Delray Beach.  LWV members in these three largest communities of south county, including incorporated and unincorporated areas, have formed groups that focus on local concerns.  Programs  include speakers who discuss local topics, community visits, and coverage of local government meetings.

·        The Education committee examines the controversies surrounding the county public school system with concerns about adequate financial support, concurrency, single member districts and division of the county into several districts. The state League is closely watching the evolution of charter schools.

·        The Social Policy committee has been concerned  with Welfare families in transition (the WAGES program), child abuse (its prevention), child care, foster homes, and health care issues.

·       The International Relations committee studies and disseminates information to encourage strengthening of international organizations and promoting peace in an interdependent world. Since the 2002-2003 year, the committee is following the Great Decisions program, with monthly discussion meetings.

For the 2001-2002 year, the committee worked on the National League's update to the position on World Trade, as well as a concurrence for the updated LWVUS position on the UN.

·   The Justice committee  has initiated a basic study on ways the justice system affects the average citizen, and which courts may be  involved. This will be followed by a study of the independence of the justice system and juvenile justice.

·  The Natural Resources committee examines concerns about the environment and the quality of life.  Members interests include land use and growth management (especially development in the Agricultural reserve), water availability (especially the plight of the Everglades and the current Restudy of water management), transportation, and waste management.

·  Women and Children  committee is researching and studying the trafficking of women and children for illegal work, including sex workers, in the U.S. and the state of Florida. The committee has written up its findings for the education of our members and the general public.
