2016 Legislative Preview Report

Legislative Preview – Nov 28, 2016

The League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County, and 11 co-sponsoring organizations with members spanning all demographics,  hosted several members of our legislative delegation.  The event took place at the Duncan Theater of Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth. 150+ members of the public attended and questioned their legislators about the upcoming session.   Questions from the audience were varied and detailed, touching on voting rights, health care, education, civil rights, immigration, juvenile justice and the next year’s constitutional revision.  Legislators gave impassioned responses. Each legislator described his/her goals and priorities for the upcoming session, as well. Representative Joseph Abruzzo pleaded for teacher respect and adequate pay while Representative Emily Slosberg bemoaned the treatment of juveniles in the adult criminal justice system.  All echoed Senator Clemens when he spoke about the importance of personal contact with your legislator. “Come to Tallahassee or to our  local offices and sit face-to-face,”  This is critical  rather than just email communication.  The two hour session gave PBC citizens a deeper understanding of the challenges that lie ahead in 2017.
