Advocacy Committee Report- October

Date: November 1, 2017

Chair: Debra Chandler   561-254-4441

Report of Issues, Events & Dates:

  • The first class of Super Advocacy’s second training session, Perfect Pitch I, was completed and attended by eight. Karen Wilkerson gave in depth ideas and tools for persuasion. Feedback was very positive. Part II is scheduled on October 26, 2017 at 2:00 pm at COMPASS. A separate “Letter to the Editor” training featuring Howard Goldman, an editor at the Palm Beach Post, will facilitate. While Perfect Pitch II is limited to those who have attended Perfect Pitch I, Letters is open to all.
  • Ken Thomas, who took over Legislative Preview and Wrap-up will report on the October 3rd event.
  • Sammy Alzofon is continuing as our liaison for “Affordable Housing”, which promises to be a top local priority. She is extremely well suited to the role & is a League asset.
  • The first Legislative Delegation meeting was held in Boca Raton. LWVPBC was very well represented. Five different speakers, all of whom were well received by the legislators address our legislative priorities. It can be viewed on-line.
  • All legislators have been very receptive to meeting with us, and a number of the meetings have taken place. I am in the process of scheduling meetings with the remaining legislators, hopefully prior to the start of the session.
  • We now have at least 15 members who are either experienced advocates or who have had in depth training in advocacy. Every Issue Group has at least 1 member who can be considered a “Super Advocate”. Additional training will be held as needed.

Our next meeting has not been scheduled and will occur as needed.
