Urgent Action: CRC

Dear Friends,
The Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) is Florida’s unique system of examining its constitution every 20 years for any revisions, amendments or changes it determines the electorate can consider to be law for the next 20 years (until 2048). It has until May 10 to submit its proposals, which go directly onto the ballot. Each proposal placed on the ballot needs 60% approval to pass. Governor Scott was in charge of forming the 37 member committee. Please go to for details:
The CRC has been conducting itself poorly: its process for public input hearings has been faulty from the start, i.e., initially, it failed to announce a hearing in Orlando until hours before it was to start,; interrupting the 3-minute time for …

Equal Rights?

Womens Equality DayEQUAL RIGHTS?

The following speech was given by LWVPBC President Karen Wilkerson at the Women’s Equality Day event sponsored by PBC NOW on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Delray City Library.

It was in March of 1972 that Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment and sent it to the states for ratification.

In the seventies, I was a young mother, eager to secure the rights for myself and my daughters. In fact, I even brought my daughters to the state house when the debate was scheduled. Hopes were high.

LWVPBC President Karen Wilkerson Speaks at CRC

Below is a transcript of President Wilkerson’s speech to the Constitution Revision Commission hearing at FAU in Boca Raton this past April 7.

President Karen WilkersonI am Karen Wilkerson from North Palm Beach. As President of the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County, I am speaking on their behalf.

A twenty year revision of the state constitution is an important occasion. Therefore, we strongly feel that the Commission should abide by the Florida Sunshine Laws. The progress of this important review must be transparent, open to the public, and reflect the public views. Otherwise, its work will not be accepted at the polling booth.
This present round of hearings did not permit most legislators to participate. Short notice, selection of days and times did not make it possible

Message from President Karen Wilkerson

President Karen Wilkerson

We had a presidential campaign concentrated on made up news and sound bites of distraction. We must demand investigating reporting and fact checking. The League must lead the way to better voter education. That means more than explaining what is on a ballot. It means making sure that voters understand government programs long before they are distorted in campaign speeches. Because we have neglected to spread our knowledge, voters have not had the information to make good choices.
We can rethink the way we provide information. We can do a better job of letting voters know where to find factual information. That is our mission. Ironically, we know the information. We need to rethink our delivery system.
I look at these situations as opportunities for our League to …
