JUSTICE BARBARA J. PARIENTE

“Current and Future Challenges facing Florida’s Judiciary”
Justice Pariente has served on the Florida Supreme Court since 1998 and was elected as Chief Justice from 2004 through 2006. She was the second woman to have been appointed to the Supreme Court. Concerned about increasingly political attacks on the judiciary, she has been active in the National Association of Women Judges’ Informed Voters – Fair Judges Project (IVP), which is a non-partisan voter education project designed to educate voters about the importance of a fair and impartial …

Women’s March

Women's March

WOMEN’S MARCH–JANUARY 21, 2017

On Saturday, January 21, 2017, millions of women and men gathered—in the streets of Palm Beach County, in major cities here in Florida, across our nation, and in countries around the world. The presence of concerned citizens was could not be ignored! Their voices were heard!
The Women’s March was a powerful, inspiring event. Read a few testimonials written by League participants and view a gallery of photos shared by a few of the many League members who attended the various event in various locations.
said, “I went to Miami (nothing could have stopped me) to show my support for women’s rights, civil rights, LBG rights, human rights, sensible gun laws and affordable health care for every American.”

ELECTORAL COLLEGE

ELECTORAL COLLEGE

By Nancy Cohen, Voting Rights Coalition

The Electoral College makes a mockery of our one-person one-vote principles:

  • The candidate who won the most votes did not win the election in two of the last five presidential elections.
  • our vote in Florida is worth less than 1/3 a vote in the least populous states—this is small state bias.
  • Battleground states get all the action: Presidential campaigns concentrate on battleground states; battleground states receive disproportionate funding, more federal grants, more favors, and more attention.
  • State winner-take-all laws adversely affect governance: under winner-take-all rules, a slim majority of voters can control 100% of a state’s electors, leaving everyone else effectively without representation, leading to decreased voter turnout, under-voting, no-choice elections, and disenfranchisement of voters.

In 2006 Hendrik Hertzberg wrote in The

Ms. Karen Wilkerson
President
League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County

Dear Ms. Wilkerson,
Thank you partner! Your endorsement of the Palm Beach County One Penny Sales surtax was a successful campaign. The time invested by your organization to understand why the One Penny was needed and how it was going to be spent proved to be an effective partnership. As a trusted voice in our county, your advocacy for the One Penny demonstrated a historic collaboration for Palm Beach County.

Now the real work begins. The voters of Palm Beach County have placed their trust and confidence in our One Penny plan as reflected in the approval of the sales tax. I look forward to collaborating with

POSITIVE NEWS FROM THE HEALTHCARE COMMITTEE

POSITIVE NEWS FROM THE HEALTHCARE COMMITTEE

POSITIVE NEWS FROM THE HEALTHCARE COMMITTEE
By Nancy Gau, Chair of Healthcare Committee

Bipartisan Victory
In case you missed it in the news this past fall, both the U.S. Senate and House overwhelmingly passed the 21 Century Cures Act (H.R.6). It was signed into law on Dec. 13, 2016.
This $6.3 billion measure is the product of years of healthcare policy debate and is a huge bipartisan victory for medical research.
More Funding for Cancer Research
Among many other things, this legislation will boost federal research efforts to combat cancer, including $1.8 billion in funding for Vice President Joe Biden’s “cancer moonshot” initiative. Biden, who lost his son to brain cancer in 2015, has spent the past year traveling to leading cancer centers in support of this bill,

JANUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING

JANUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING

MEMBERSHIP MEETING
The January General Meeting focused on how the League selects issues to study.

Corinne Miller at the January Meeting

Corinne Miller explains the process used to decide which issues are supported by the League.

Corinne Miller explained the League’s unique consensus-reaching process to the over 70 members in attendance.

This meeting at the Quaker Meeting House in Lake Worth was the first time many of our new members had access to Corinne’s wisdom and experience.

The wealth of our on-going study and stance on critical issues is available in copies of two League books: Study and Action and Impact on Issues. Corinne briefly reviewed these books that contain all the positions of the League, as well as our basic principles.
Please contact President Karen Wilkerson to purchase a copy of either or
