Multi-partisan grassroots coalition successfully leads a solar uprising to defeat $26 million utility-backed deceptive ballot measure

Tampa, Fla. – Today Florida voters rejected Amendment 1 – the utility-backed proposal that sought to limit the growth of customer-owned solar power in the Sunshine State.

In a true David and Goliath battle, a diverse grassroots coalition of more than 200 organizations, solar companies, elected officials, and thousands of concerned citizens successfully rallied nearly 50 percent of the state to vote against the deceptive utility-backed amendment. Amendment 1 is funded by Florida’s big utilities to protect their monopoly markets and limit customer-owned solar.

Follow the money: Florida Power & Light (FPL), Duke Energy and other big power companies want to maintain their monopoly control on profits from electricity sales and limit customer-owned solar. Solar power is poised to grow in the Sunshine State, which would allow customers to generate their own power and buy less from the electric utilities. To date, the monopoly utilities have contributed the majority of the $20 million collected to promote this Amendment to protect their power sales all the while claiming they are “pro-solar.” In

Meredith Barnard presentation on fracking in Florida

meredith-barnardMeredith Barnard gave an enlightening presentation October 27th to the Environmental Issues Group of LWVPBC. She discussed the fracking going on in our back yards here in south Florida.

Her background in Marine Science and Environmental Affairs has led her to the Conservancy of SW Florida. This environmental group is one of five that filed the lawsuit against the National Park Service expressing the need for comprehensive data required before, not after, issuing a permit to Burnett Oil Co to begin seismic testing in Big Cypress National Preserve. This land sits on the Biscayne Aquifer which provides clean water for over 7 million people in SW Florida.
