The LWV PBC is happy to be involved in PBC school programs and activities.  On February 16th at Park Vista High School, members of the Civics Education Committee team, including Phyllis Goldenberg, Christene Campbell-Gabor, Cindy Sheehan-Hartwell and LWVPBC Intern Faith Maniti, volunteered to judge 185 students from 15 different middle school and high schools in Palm Beach County for National History Day. What an exceptional event it was!  The projects were fascinating and the students did an amazing job preparing and presenting their projects.

The LWVPBC is delighted to sponsor the Palm Beach County School District’s 3rd Annual Government Bee again this year.  This year’s event will be held on April 7, 2018 at Seminole Ridge High School.

The Government Bee is an academic style competition that encourages teams of students to become engaged in Civics Education.  Similar to a spelling bee, participants go head-to-head answering questions about their government.  The finals are exciting and great fun to watch.

The Palm Beach Post Auditorium was a packed house on Saturday morning, February 3. League members, local educators, county residents and families listened attentively to the panel comprised of Palm Beach County School Board members and our own committee chairs: Christine Campbell Gabor, Civics Education, and Kimberly Spire-Oh, Education.  Attendees received insights regarding pending legislation in Tallahassee and issues facing the Palm Beach County schools–with emphasis on charter/private schools.

LWVPBC Interns Faith Maniti and Dayalis Zamora presented at the PBC Legislative delegation public hearing on December 1st, 2017 at Palm Beach State College Belle Glade Campus.

Our Civics Education team is asking for the Legislators to sponsor or support a bill that would ensure that Civics Education is taught to all students from kindergarten through college.

Congratulation Dayalis and Faith on a job well done. We are all proud of (and impressed by) your presentation skills and the work that you are doing with the League.

The message at the Sunday, November 26 Celebration of America at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton was clear.  Civics Education, Civility and Voting are of the utmost importance to our democracy.

LWVPBC Chair of Civics Education, Christene Campbell-Gabor, met with Doug Dobson, Executive Director of the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government in Orlando to discuss Civics Education.


The Institute serves every District in Florida and is a recognized national leader in Civics Education. The Institute supports continuous improvement in civic learning and provides excellent sites for teachers, supervisors, and students.

Civics Education and Senator Bob Graham


The Civics Education Committee, under the energetic leadership of Christene Campbell-Gabor, continues to seek out new opportunities to make a positive difference!

On June 29, representatives from our League joined Senator Bob Graham for a productive meeting regarding the history and the future of Civics Education in Florida.
