Cool Topic: Constitutional Crises

Despite stormy skies, on September 27, Attorney Irving Labovitz presented a menu of legal issues which confront all of us. With insight and humor, Labovitz discussed many topics including: Gerrymandering, the travel ban, impeachment requirements, honoring the American flag, collusion vs. conspiring, sanctuary cities, executive order, and executive privilege.

Labovitz’s discussion of Gerrymandering included the history of the term and the pivotal role that the League of Women Voters in Arizona in the case of Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the independent redistricting commission could be set by the voters to establish fair districts. The commission in that state was created by popular vote through a ballot initiative.

On June 13, members and friends met at the Palm Beach Post Building to hear an evening Why Courts Matter presentation on the Role of the Courts in Immigration. Attorney Jackie Delgado provided a history of immigration in the United States and, also, explained the present systems that pertain to family sponsorships, “dreamers,” backlog of citizenship applications, etc.

On very well attended March 1, 2017 “Cool Topic” membership meeting at the Quaker Meeting House in Lake Worth, the League debuted the new power point presentation on the Electoral College.  Voting  Rights Coalition Co-chair Nancy Cohen introduced the program. Ethelene (Lennie) Jones M.D., Chair of the LWVPBC Speakers Bureau walked us through the interesting and informative presentation. A discussion session.
