Cindy Sheehan-Hartwell proudly represented the almost 600 members of the League at the Palm Beach County School Board meeting, April 19, as she read a statement supporting the School Board’s resolution to protect students’ safety and privacy.

Many community members, including a pediatrician, spoke about the stress that PBC students are experiencing as a result of their fear of family members being deported. All requested that the PBC school board pass a resolution that would provide a safe environment for all students.

The resolution states that federal authorities must have a court order to obtain confidential student information or entry to campus. LWVPBC members had voted unanimously at their Annual Business Meeting that morning to support the resolution.

INTRODUCTION


The following positions for Study in Action were developed from the Florida League of Women Voters’ 2012-13 state-wide study on school choice. The League initiated the study to better understand the oversight of public moneys that are allocated to charter schools and other private educational institutions. How these alternative public/private educational programs align with the constitutional requirement for a uniform, high quality school system of free public schools as stated in the Florida Constitution was also a concern.
