Bipartisan Victory
In case you missed it in the news this past fall, both the U.S. Senate and House overwhelmingly passed the 21 Century Cures Act (H.R.6). It was signed into law on Dec. 13, 2016.
This $6.3 billion measure is the product of years of healthcare policy debate and is a huge bipartisan victory for medical research.
More Funding for Cancer Research
Among many other things, this legislation will boost federal research efforts to combat cancer, including $1.8 billion in funding for Vice President Joe Biden’s “cancer moonshot” initiative. Biden, who lost his son to brain cancer in 2015, has spent the past year traveling to leading cancer centers in support of this bill,

Statement of Position on Public Policy on Reproductive Choices, as announced by LWV National Board, January 1983: The League of Women Voters of the United States believes that public policy in a pluralistic society must affirm the constitutional right of privacy of the individual to make reproductive choices.


LWVF Reproductive Health and Justice Committee.

Our Committee, chaired by Amy Weintraub of LWV St Pete Area, was formed in the fall of 2016 to advance the LWVUS’s Public Policy on Reproductive Choice in Florida. Currently, we are busy monitoring government entities and getting geared up for the 2017 Florida Legislative Session.

AHC A – American Health Care Association (a non-profit federation of affiliated state health organizations).

ACA – Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare)

AAAHC – Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care

Catastrophic Health Plan – one that provides minimal coverage

CHAIN – Community Health Action Information Network (A statewide consumer health advocacy organization)

CHIP – Children’s Health Insurance Program

CTG – Close the Gap (a statewide attempt to expand Medicaid coverage to the working poor)

UNITED STATE OF WOMEN

Womens Bureau Director Latifa Lyles moderated the seminar Get Fair Pay How to Achieve Pay EquityLast week, the Women’s Bureau participated in the White House United State of Women Summit. The summit rallied 5,000 attendees from across the country to celebrate what we’ve achieved, and how we’re going to take action moving forward. President Obama and other administration officials, activists, and celebrities covered key gender equality issues, including economic empowerment, entrepreneurship and violence against women. Women’s Bureau Director Latifa Lyles moderated the seminar “Get Fair Pay: How to Achieve Pay Equity” which brought together academics, business leaders, and advocates of fair pay.
