Sell-Out Crowd Learns About Opioid Crisis

Although Karen Wilkerson, President, in her introduction, was proud to announce the new  LWVPBC partnership with JFK Medical Center and Palms West Hospital, sponsors of the July Hot Topics, she warned the sell-out sized audience that they were about to get “depressing news.”  Why would the League present a depressing Hot Topics? To implement a positive change in understanding the Opioid Crisis — affecting our neighbors, our families.

Deirdre Macnab, former President, League of Women Voters of Florida, and currently a member of Florida’s Federal Judicial Nominating Commission, spoke at the Palm Beach County Hot Topics Luncheon on May 17, 2017.  Hot Topic:  Solar for Florida!

Deirdre reported that Florida has fallen behind in solar home installations for two reasons:  Knowledge and Price.  But with citizen support and the passage of Amendment 4, tax breaks are now provided to solar homeowners. You should be aware of Florida’s laws:

  • Everyone/anyone can put solar on their roof.  HOA’s cannot prevent!
  • Utilities must offer NET METERING – they buy back unused power.
  • Residential solar installation costs are EXEMPT from both property and sales tax.

Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente

On April 23rd at Atlantis Country Club, LWVPBC, in conjunction with the National Council of Jewish Women, the ACLU and the Women’s Foundation of Florida, held a very special event.  Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente spoke to a crowd of about 125 people, including many judges, members of the bar, and elected officials, about the “Current and Future Challenges facing Florida’s Judiciary.”

After four decades in the legal profession and on the bench, Justice Pariente was very well placed to give us this overview.  The Justice’s engaging address highlighted the importance of an independent judiciary

Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente spoke on the “Current and Future Challenges facing Florida’s Judiciary”

The League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County, together with NCJW, ACLU, and the Women’s Foundation, hosted Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente at a luncheon at Atlantis Country Club on April 23, 2017.  Justice Pariente spoke eloquently about the role of the court and the importance of an independent judiciary.  After completion of her prepared remarks, she took time to answer several questions from the audience of more than 125.  She explained the difficulty of separating her personal opinions from the rule of law in order to reach rulings in everything from death penalty cases to whether proposed ballot language for citizen initiated constitutional amendments is lawful.  Her remarks

Dr. Kevin Wagner, Phd, professor at FAU, former attorney, and lecturer on American Politics started his April Hot Topics on a serious note, but succeeded in making all in attendance laugh while learning how modern media has transformed the political process in America. In talking about his 2014 book Tweeting to Power: Social Media Revolution in American Politics  (Oxford University Press, 2014), Dr. Wagner quipped that he did not predict the rise of President Trump through the use of twitter, but did say the phenomenon has been good for his book sales.
