the VOTER

January 1, 2025

Kathi Gundlach

PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE

Here's to a happy, healthy and productive New Year
Hope everyone had wonderful holidays and is now ready to get back to work. Voter Services will educate and register voters in the community. LWVPBC has become a League of Cities member, and Advocacy plans to work with local governments to promote the concerns of Palm Beach County citizens. Voting Rights will continue its education efforts and work with affiliated groups. The Speakers Bureau is working to provide more interesting programs in the community. We hope to reactivate Forums to provide the ability to hear from candidates in the March municipal elections.

Please register for these important upcoming events:
* The annual fundraiser luncheon is Feb. 26 at the West Palm Beach Marriott. MSNBC anchor Katie Phang and author/historian Dr. Robert Watson will speak. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. To donate auction items, contact Linda Kramer at LWVPBCAssistant@gmail.com. Tickets, at $150, can be purchased online. We aim to make this the most successful fundraiser to date, and that will take all of your help.
* The Jan. 15 Hot Topic at The Fountains Country Club will feature David Lawrence, President & CEO of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County, and Milton Segarra, President & CEO of Discover the Palm Beaches.
* Membership’s “Connect & Reboot” event will be Feb. 8 at the South County Civic Center in Delray Beach. Outgoing State Attorney Dave Aronberg will speak.

As you can see, we need you to help with all our activities. Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Kathi Gundlach, President

SPEAKERS BUREAU PLANNING ITS FUTURE
The Speakers Bureau Team recently gathered, in person and via Zoom, to brainstorm exciting activities for 2025, all aimed at maximizing our impact and shaping meaningful outcomes for the future. We’re forming small groups to create and update presentation content, expanding outreach to organizations and diverse communities, and collaborating with other League teams. We aim to make 2025 the year to lay the foundation for future success, and we’d love to have you be part of it.

Have questions about the team? Interested in joining us? Send an email to
SpeakersBureau@LWVPBC.org — we’d love to hear from you.

Janet Elinoff, Speakers Bureau Chair

LWV CHANGING ITS MEMBERSHIP SYSTEM
For several years, the League of Women Voters at the national level has been planning to change how dues are collected and how local leagues receive their share of dues. The new dues process will begin Feb. 1. Read the highlights.

Postpone new rules by renewing early
Beginning Feb. 1, instead of renewing directly on the Palm Beach County League's website, once you go to our website you will be transferred to the LWV national website to renew there. The full explanation can be found on the LWVPBC website in the MEMBERS menu.

To avoid the new procedure for another year, you can renew before Jan. 25, at the Palm Beach County League website, even if your membership does not expire for many months. If you renew now, you will be adding 1 year onto your current membership. For example, if your renewal date is currently July 15, 2025, and you renew today, your new renewal date will be July 15, 2026.

To renew now, follow these basic instructions:
  1. Log in to the LWVPBC website.
  2. Hover your mouse over your name in the top right corner and select “Profile."
  3. In your Profile (on the right side) you will see a box that says "Your Membership is not yet due for renewal. If you want to renew early, click here.” Click on the highlighted word “here," and then follow the prompts.
  4. When finished entering information, you will be directed to put in your credit card info.

If you usually renew offline with a check, please follow the directions above and try to renew on the website. If that is not something you can do, please contact Assistant Treasurer Dorneth Weir by email at Treasurer@LWVPBC.org to make arrangements to renew with a paper form.

BYLAWS ARE UPDATED
We have new bylaws, approved at a Dec. 16 general membership meeting following a board meeting. Thank you to all who attended. The new bylaws are in accordance with the national League’s transformation and meet the needs and requirements of the LWVPBC Education and Advocacy Funds.

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO
Holiday Party 2024 Standing
Festive foodies ring in the holidays
Holiday Party 2024 table
Thanks to Reisha Allen for organizing the Palm Beach County League's Dec. 11 holiday party at the South Dixie branch of Don Ramon's Cuban restaurant in West Palm Beach. While we enjoyed a varied and plentiful selection of hors d'oeuvres, waiters dropped by to bring us delicious sangria, margaritas and more.  More photos are available in this gallery on our website.

Last 2024 Taste of the League held Nov. 16
More than 50 new members, guests and League leaders gathered at the Lantana Branch Library to hear updates from all the Issue Groups and to get acquainted. Special thanks to Linda Prior who prepared all the refreshments and to the Membership team for facilitating the event.
