Your Action is Needed! (posted March 14, 2017)

TOMORROW, Wednesday, March 15th, the full Senate will vote on SB 128. This bill would require prosecutors to try Stand Your Ground (SYG) cases twice – once in a pretrial hearing and once in front of a jury.

Stand Your Ground laws give undue advantage to those using deadly force in cases of a perceived threat.  There is no “duty to retreat,” before resorting to such force.

A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine shows that since the passage of the 2005 SYG law, homicides in Florida increased by 21%. Making it easier for defendants to use the SYG defense will only create a more dangerous Florida.

Thank you for your continued commitment to making democracy work!

(posted February 28, 2017)

Dear Friend—

Legislation that would repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was introduced this week by the leadership in the House of Representatives. And after an 18-hour marathon meeting, the bill cleared its first hurdle by passage in the Ways and Means Committee in the early hours of the morning.

This new bill, developed in secret and being rushed to passage, will rip apart our healthcare and revoke coverage for millions of Americans while raising costs for millions more. Tell your Representative that this is unacceptable.

The “American Health Care Act” is un-American. It will increase costs for seniors and those with pre-existing conditions, while slashing assistance for lower-income households in obtaining coverage. It will also threaten the essential care that women need. In fact, the only real winners under this new legislation are the big interests and the wealthiest Americans. Hundreds of billions in tax breaks are included for the wealthy and the pharmaceutical and insurance industries.

Tell your Representative that means that there will be fewer people covered, weaker protections and higher costs for Americans.

The League remains committed to ensuring that Americans have the coverage and access to care that they need to take care of themselves and their families. We will not stand by while members of Congress dismantle protections for the health and well-being of the American public.

Stand with the League today and tell Congress that their plan to “replace” the Affordable Care Act is unacceptable.
