Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente

On April 23rd at Atlantis Country Club, LWVPBC, in conjunction with the National Council of Jewish Women, the ACLU and the Women’s Foundation of Florida, held a very special event.  Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente spoke to a crowd of about 125 people, including many judges, members of the bar, and elected officials, about the “Current and Future Challenges facing Florida’s Judiciary.”

After four decades in the legal profession and on the bench, Justice Pariente was very well placed to give us this overview.  The Justice’s engaging address highlighted the importance of an independent judiciary

  • the threats it faces from those outside who want to politicize it the need to promote civic education so that people understand the judiciary’s role as an equal and separate branch of government.

Justice Pariente told us about the work of the non-partisan, National Association of Women Judges “Informed Voters-Fair Judges” Project, which informs voters about how to ensure that judges are fair and impartial.  For more information visit the website at http://ivp.nawj.org.
