There are so many gun-related issues that those who support gun “rights” and those who support gun regulations can have understandable disagreements. But one issue, guns and kids, is different. Most of the tropes presented by “gun rights” advocates supporting the reduction of gun regulation laws fall apart when considering the carnage on the young ages 2-24, especially children under 14 years of age. Consider what some experts have stated:
- “In 2008-2009 the number of preschoolers killed in gun incidents was nearly double the number of police killed in the same time period.” (Children Defense Fund. 2012).
- “In 2010 gun related injuries accounted for 6,570 deaths of children and young people (1-24 years of age). That includes 7 deaths per day among people 1 to 19.” (The New England Journal of Medicine, Preventing Guns Deaths in Children, Drs. Judith and Sean Palfrey. Jan. 31, 2013).
- “When compared with children in other high income countries, American children and youth between the ages of five and fourteen were 13 times as likely to die as a result of gun homicide, 8 times as likely to be a gun suicide victim, and 11 times as likely to die from an unintentional gun discharge.” (Confronting Gun Violence in American; Tom Gabor, 2016, pg. 44).
This raging scourge of gun violence endangers our children. The LWVPBC is presenting a panel discussion on this topic. Please plan to come and learn what steps can be taken to reach solutions. The event is free and the general public is warmly invited to attend.
